The Virginia Department of Corrections has the mission to enhance the quality of life in the Commonwealth by improving public safety.

The department seeks to accomplish this through reintegration of sentenced offenders and care by providing supervision and control, effective programs and re-entry services in safe environments which foster positive change and growth. This will be influenced by research-based evidence, fiscal responsibility, and constitutional standards.

The Virginia DOC website contains an offender locator search function where one can look up an inmate by their seven-digit offender ID number or their full last name and first name (or at least two characters for first name partial searches).
