Richland County Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center has two facilities where inmates live in Richland County. The Richland County Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center is the only county-operated work camp in South Carolina, providing some of the manual labor workforce in the county. All facilities offer re-entry programs, as well as academic opportunities to pursue G.E.D. or life skills training.

Sending a Mail

Inmates are allowed to be mailed letters, written on plain sheets of paper and including 4x6 photographs. Anything else in the envelope will be considered contraband, including money, stamps, newspaper/magazine clippings, craft items (glue, glitter, etc), and anything besides paper letter and photos.

Inmates are not allowed to be mailed packages, although family and friends can order them items and goods through iCare, including various apparel, packaged foods, electronics, and hygienic products.

Sending Money

Inmates need money in their accounts for a variety of things. There is a one-time admission fee of $20 for clothing and linens, as well as a daily $3 fee for food. To pay for these things, any funds in an inmate’s account will be taken out. Inmates who work in jail will have the daily fee waived.

Inmates also need money to pay for making phone calls, sending letters, and to buy items at the commissary store.

Money can be put into an inmate’s account in two ways. One is that funds in the form of a money order can be mailed to an inmate at:

Another option is to deposit funds through cash or credit card at a kiosk machine in the Central Booking and Detention Facility and at the Video Visitation Center.

Phone Calls

Inmates in Richland County Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center can make phone calls, a service hosted through CenturyLink. Family and friends receiving calls can make an account and keep funds loaded on it to receive calls on landlines or cell phones.

The rate of calling varies between in-state and intrastate calling, as well as between prepaid calls, collect calls and prepaid debit calls. The lowest call rate for in-state, prepaid calls is $0.15/minute. The highest rate is $0.25/minute for interstate calls. International calls are prohibited.

Visiting Rules

Inmates at Richland County Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center are allowed video visitation. This type of interaction with inmates is highly encouraged. Inmates are usually allowed three 40-minute visits per week, if not more based on good behavior. Each visit can include up to two visitors at a time.

Friends and family can schedule a visit either at a kiosk in the jail lobby or online by creating an account. All visits must be made at least 24 hours in advance.

As with in-person visits, there are regulations that visitors must follow. When going to the video visitation facility, visitors should only bring their identification with them and arrive 15 minutes early to check in. Do not bring cell phones or any other items except a car key. Dress as you would for an in-person visit – appropriate and modest attire is required. Clothing should cover shoulders, stomach and the top half of the leg and should not contain crude or profane words or images.
