Inmate Search

Inmates who have been incarcerated since 1982 can be located online through the Federal Bureau of Prisons website. One can locate an inmate by searching their BOP, DCDC, FBI or INS number or by their first and last name. Additional information that can be used to narrow down search results is race, age and sex. The inmate’s institution is listed in the search results.

Sending a Mail

Correspondence is encouraged between inmates and loved ones during incarceration. There are two categories of mail: general and special. General correspondence is opened and inspected for contraband. Special mail (from or two government workers and offices) must be marked as such and will be opened and inspected in the presence of the inmate.

Inmates are not allowed to receive packages unless they receive approval from their unit or staff team. Packages that are approved can only contain clothing to be worn upon release and medical devices. All packages should be sent freight/non-UPS. Family and friends can send published material (soft cover books and magazines) directly from a publishing site (i.e. Amazon). These items must be approved by staff and should not contain content that is overly violent, sexual or crude.

Sending Money

The Federal Bureau of Prisons website lays out a few different ways that money can be deposited into an inmate’s commissary account. Inmates are not allowed to possess physical money, but can use their account money to make purchases at the institution store.

Funds can be sent electronically through MoneyGram or Western Union. Family and friends must make accounts with either service. Or one can send a money order through the mail to Federal Bureau of Prisons, Inmate Name, Inmate Eight-Digit Register Number, Post Office Box 474701, Des Moines, Iowa 50947-0001.

Phone Calls

Inmates are allowed to make phone calls. Calls may be monitored, and in most cases, the inmate must pay to make the calls, although sometimes the receiving party may be charged.

Visiting Rules

Visitation is encouraged from family, friends, coworkers and other acquaintances. There are some regulations for those who wish to visit to keep the experience safe.

Before Visiting

When inmates are checked into the institution, they must fill out a visitor information form where they list potential visitors. That form will be mailed to each person on the visitor list, who should then complete the form and send it back to the address listed on it. Further background information may need to be obtained on potential visitors.

Length of Visits

An inmate gets four hours per month of visiting time, with the potential for more time granted based on institution.

Dress Code

Clothing should not be revealing, see-through, or contain profane images or language. Prohibited items of clothing include bathing suits, low-cut, backless shirts/dresses, crop tops, sleeveless shirts, hats/caps, mini skirts/shorts, and clothing that resembles inmate clothing (khaki or green military-like clothing).
