Mecklenburg County Jail Central is a direct supervision facility which opened in February 1997. The building combines an arrest processing center and a pre-trial detention facility. It also houses a full-service medical component, which includes an infirmary, centralized property storage, administrative services, and various support services.

The total capacity for this jail is 1904 inmates. This jail includes an outdoor exercise areas in each housing unit, a weekender intake processing center, two medical clinics, and a conference center.

Inmate Search

Use this inmate search to find inmates in the Mecklenburg County Jail. You can search them by using these four categories:

Sending a Mail

  • Incoming mail must have the inmate's first and last name and PID number on the correspondence.
  • Books, magazines, newspapers, or periodicals will be accepted only if they are sent directly from a bookstore or publisher. An invoice must be accompanied.
  • Legal mail is exempt from standard procedures for inspection. The Housing Supervisor will open all legal mail in the presence of the inmate to check for contraband.
  • All incoming mail must have a return address, or it will be returned to the Post Office.

Unacceptable Items

Any mail or contents that the mailroom deems as unacceptable will be returned to sender. The following is a list of items that if sent by mail will not be accepted into the MCSO jail facilities. The list includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Money orders, checks, or money (currency)
  • Food
  • Polaroid's, stickers, tape,
  • Illicit photos
  • Material advocating violence
  • Material advocating racial, religious, or national hatred
  • Gang-related material such as signs and/or symbols
  • Perfume sprayed on the envelope or letter

Sending Money

Money orders or cashier checks are accepted by mail and must be made payable to the name given to the inmate when the inmate was placed in jail.

The inmate's date of birth and Positive Identification Number (PID number) must be written on the face of the money order/cashier's check. This information can be obtained from the inmate.

The sender's name and address must be written on the face of the money order/cashier's check. Be sure to write the sender's return address on the envelope. Address the envelope to the inmate's name, spelled as he/she is incarcerated to:

Funds can also be deposited to an inmate's account through TouchPay. A TouchPay kiosk machine is located in the lobby of Jail Central and Jail North. Money deposited in this machine will go to the inmate's Trust Account.

There is also a toll-free number to fund inmate accounts through TouchPay – 1-866-232-1899. When using the toll-free number you will be asked for the Facility Locator Number – that number is 228201.

Phone Calls

Inmates have the ability to make collect telephone calls from their living area. If an inmate is attempting to contact you, a recorded message will inform you that the call is from an inmate at the Mecklenburg County Jail.

During the recorded message, you will receive options to accept the call, refuse the call, be informed of the applied calling charges, or "block future calls" to your telephone number

A recorded message will alert you when the call has reached 14 minutes and there is only one minute remaining.

Mecklenburg County Jail inmates are also allowed to place international calls using a GTL Calling Card, made available to inmates, and specifically designed for International Calls only. International cards may be purchased through inmate commissary.

Visiting Rules

Each inmate is afforded two free 25 minute on-site personal/family video visits per week, not on the same day.

Visitors conduct visits via stations at the MCSO Administrative Services Building (formerly the Work Release and Restitution Center) located at 901 Elizabeth Avenue in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Additional internet visits can be conducted via a webcam-enabled computer, or Android device, at a cost of $12.50 for a 25-minute visit, or $5.00 for a 10-minute visit. Depending on availability, inmate visits can be scheduled for any day of the week. In-person visits are available.

Visits may be less than 25 minutes due to facility emergencies, lockdowns or for disciplinary reasons.

Visits conducted via the MCSO Work Release and Restitution Center are limited to two adults and one child or one adult and two children (adults = 18 and over).
