Mail must be sent abiding by the following guidelines:

  • All inmate mail must be sent through the U.S. Postal Service

  • All incoming and outgoing mail is scanned and inspected for contraband

  • Do not send cash through the mail

  • Inmates are not allowed to receive any type of consumable items from outside the jail facility—including food or beverages.

  • Inmates are not allowed to receive any contraband items or pornographic materials.

Examples of contraband items include:

  • Letters or pictures written in crayon or gel pens

  • Stickers, glitter, glue

  • Gang graffiti or symbols that could be considered gang graffiti

  • Lewd or lascivious pictures

  • Pictures depicting gang signs

Mail addressed to an inmate who has been transferred or released will be returned to the sender providing there is a return address. If no return address is listed, the mail will be destroyed.

Sending Money

Money may be dropped off for an inmate and put on his or her account.

A KIOSK to deposit funds is available in the public vestibule just inside the main entrance to the Rio Arriba County Detention Center building. Funds deposited into the KIOSK will immediately show up in the inmate’s account.

Checks or money orders that are mailed to the inmate are promptly deposited into the inmate’s account.

Only send money orders or checks issued to the inmate through the mail. Never send cash through the mail.

Phone Calls

Messages are not taken for inmates at the Rio Arriba County Detention Center. If you wish to leave a message for an inmate, you can call the inmate message system at 575-588-7350. These messages are not confidential.

In the event of an emergency situation, however, the Correctional Officer will take the name and phone number and allow a return call.

Inmates may purchase phone cards through the canteen for $10.60 each.

The Rio Arriba County Detention Center phone system only accepts phone cards. Collect calling may be set up for inmates by calling 575-588-7350.

Visiting Rules

All inmate visitation is on an appointment format only.

To visit you need a government-issued ID, and you need to dress appropriately.

The Rio Arriba County Detention Center staff will turn anyone away who is not dressed appropriately for a visit.

  1. Wear clothes that are not revealing.
  2. Don't wear see-through material.
  3. Have all undergarments covered (males and females) and avoid a lot of cleavage.
  4. Shorts and skirts should reach mid-thigh.
  5. Sleeves should be at least half-way to your elbow.

The following types of clothing are also prohibited:

Clothing promoting gang affiliation.

Anything displaying drugs, weapons or profanity.

Clothing depicting anything obscene.

Prison Life

The Rio Arriba County Detention Center offers a variety of opportunities for inmates who are interested in advancing their education, with programs like Adult Basic Education, computer/writing classes and options to obtain a GED.

There are also a variety of activities within the facility such as movie nights, theatre presentations, and game tournaments.

For inmates interested in starting a recovery program there are several options including Alcoholics Anonymous, “Set Free” Christian treatment program, and Teen Challenge informational meetings.

Inmates who wish to explore their faith can participate in a weekly church service, Residents Encountering Christ (REC) weekend retreats.

The Rio Arriba County Detention Center provides basic health care services from a contracted correctional health care company.

Medical staff consists of one RN who works normal business hours Monday – Friday and is on-call after hours and on weekends. There is also a medical doctor who visits the jail every week to visit with inmates and conduct follow-up as needed.

Health and medical information about inmates is considered private and cannot be shared with anyone, not even the family.
