According to the Shelby County Sheriff Department’s website, the department has served the citizens of Shelby County since 1822.

The website states, “We protect and serve the citizens of Shelby County with 30 Merit Deputies, 10 Reserve Deputies, 6 Courthouse Security Deputies, and a Civil Process Server. Our deputies and reserve deputies patrol just over 408 square miles and 864 miles of roadway, answer complaints and calls for service, serve civil process, warrants and investigate crimes and crashes.”

The Shelby County Criminal Justice Center houses the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, Shelbyville Police Department, and over 200 inmates in the 80,000-square foot facility with a Correctional Staff of 30.

A matron and kitchen staff of three, with the help of inmate trustees, serves nearly 600 meals daily. Two full-time maintenance staff and one custodian maintain and clean the facility daily.

Sending a Mail

Offenders are allowed unrestricted access to legal representatives and courts through the mail. Only that mail to or from an offender which is clearly identified as legal mail is treated as such. It is the responsibility of the sender to indicate that the correspondence is legal mail.

Visiting Rules

To visit an inmate, you must find out from the inmate when their visitation is. The jail staff will not release the visitation schedule of an inmate, so you will need to obtain this information from the inmate.

The public may visit no more than one time per week, Monday through Saturday at this Shelbyville IN location.

Visitors must sign in at least 15 minutes before their scheduled visits.

Inmates are allowed no more than one visit per day. Visitors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian, unless they are visiting a parent.

Unaccompanied minors (under age 18) visiting a parent must present a copy of their birth certificate. Children must remain with the parent at all times during the visit.

All visitors must have acceptable identification. This includes a driver’s license with picture identification, military ID, or another verifiable picture ID.

Any visitor who appears to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs will not be permitted to visit. Inappropriate behavior, including the use of profanity will not be permitted. No weapons will be permitted.

All visitors must wear appropriate clothing, including shoes and shirts. Restrictions on attire or appearance include:

  • no low-cut or revealing necklines
  • no attire with obscene or offensive language
  • no persons with a bare midriff

Visitors cannot bring items into the visiting area including:

  • weapons
  • purses
  • handbags
  • backpacks
  • food, drink

  • pictures
  • books
  • toys writing utensils
  • strollers or carriers
  • cell phones
  • cameras
  • any other electronic devices

Violation of the above restrictions may cause the visit to be canceled or terminated, and visiting privileges may be suspended by the Shelby Sheriff’s Department.
