Sending a Mail

For safety and security purposes, follow these standards when sending mail to inmates through the U.S. Postal Service. Mail that does not meet these standards will be returned to the sender. Legal mail is the only exception.

  • ONLY Postcards can be used to contact inmates through the U.S. Mail.

  • Postage must be metered or stamps must be pre-printed. Adhesive or glued stamps will not be accepted.

  • Postcards must be a minimum size of 3 ½ inches by 4 ¼ inches and a maximum size of 4 ¼ inches by 6 inches.

  • The actual postcard must be white.

  • Messages must be written in blue or black ink only.

  • Defaced or altered postcards will not be accepted (postcards with plastic or wrappings; postcards marked with paint, crayon, or markers; postcards with labels stickers, watermarks, or stains; postcards with biohazards, including perfumes or lipsticks; postcards depicting nudity, weapons, or gang reference; postcards containing an affixed stamp).

Sending Money

Money can be deposited to an inmate account in three ways:

  1. Make a direct deposit using cash or a debit card at a kiosk in the jail lobby or the Butte County Jail lobby

  2. Make deposits using TouchPay™ service. Call 866-232-1899 or online at touchpaydirect.com

  3. Send a Money Order to the jail using these procedures: 1) Only Western Union or U.S. Postal money orders for up to $75 are accepted. 2) The envelope must be clearly marked “inmate accounting” 3) No additional correspondence will be accepted with incoming inmate funds. 4) If additional contents are located in the envelope, the entire package will be returned to sender.

Phone Calls

Inmates at Butte County Jail can make outgoing phone calls through SECURUS Technologies using inmate debit. Inmate Debit is an inmate-owned prepaid calling account used by inmates to pay for their own telephone calls.

Inmates cannot accept incoming calls.

Visiting Rules

All visitors must be on the inmate’s approved visitation list to use either the on-site or the online (At-Home) remote services. An approved visitor is allowed only one visit per week.

All visits are by appointment only and must be scheduled 24 hours in advance by coming in to the Butte County Jail or by registering online.

Video Visitation Center

Inmates in the Butte County Jail can visit with friends or family at the jail’s video visitation center or remotely (At-Home) via the internet.

Each inmate is allowed two 30-minute visits per week at the visitation center.

Visitation Rules/Procedures

  • Visitors to the jail visitation center must present a valid government-issued photo identification card, such as an official driver’s license, a state-issued identification card, or a military identification card. Use of the visitation center is free.

  • Appropriate dress is required and no tobacco products, cell phones, or other electronic devices are allowed inside the jail.

Online (at home) visits

  • Remote online (At-Home) visitation is available for a fee from any device with internet access and/or a webcam, including a home, library, office computer, or a “smartphone” (Android or I-Phone).
